Chinese Music Ensemble
The music of a nation usually develops as early and as sophisticated as the culture of that nation. China's rich music history goes as far back as 3000 years ago, although many of her musical instruments (such as pipa, sheng and er-hu) are less well known in the west.
In 1988, Roger Fan, Gordon Gong, Anthony & Patty Lee, Steve Yang and Peter Chew organized the Chinese Music Ensemble, and offered classes for flute, er-hu and pipa.Later they even offered class for sheng. They were fortunate to be able to invite many of the famous instrumentalists from China as their instructors. They included Guang-Ming & Chi Li, Mei-Ye Ma and Xue-Hong Yu.
Guang-Ming Li was the founding Director and Head Teacher; Roger Fan was the Director. Our members are all amateur music lovers, ranging from teenagers to over 60 years old. Many members are husband and wife, and some brought their teenage children with them. The ensemble provides the members with expert instruction to refine their music skill, but more importantly, the ensemble offers a unique opportunity for younger generations to delve into the Chinese musical tradition
After more than ten years of the skillful cultivation under our expert teachers, our Ensemble has become widely renowned. We continued to perform every year at large festivities, such as the Annual Spring Festivals, and Asian Pacific Heritage Night. Additionally, we have appeared at the Edison Mid-Autumn Festival and San Fernando Mission Bi-Centennial celebration.
